Darvocet Overdose: The Beat Goes On

A leading consumer advocacy group fears that there will be even more Darvocet-related deaths due to the serious side effects, including overdose, heart attack, and suicide. Many consider Darvocet to be among the most lethal painkillers ever sold in the United States, and consumer groups have been petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to remove the product from the market for over 30 years. However, the US Drug Watchdog fears that many consumers are not yet aware of the risks associated with propoxyphene products, including Darvocet.

Long-term risks of taking Darvocet include the need for a pacemaker or medication to control heartbeat, even after the propoxyphene painkiller is no longer being taken. An estimated 22 million people have taken propoxyphene products, and over 10,000 of those people have suffered from some of the more severe side effects of the drug and developed extreme health complications as a result.

Patients who have experienced the serious side effects connected to Darvon or Darvocet as well as generic propoxyphene products have the option of filing a lawsuit in order to seek compensation for their injuries. Compensation may cover expenses such as those related to medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. When the side effect ends up with a fatal result, family members may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the company and receive a settlement based on their loss.

States have statues of limitations ranging from 1-3 years to file a wrongful death lawsuit, meaning that families thinking of filing suit should do so as soon as possible. Close family members are entitled to file suit. Although it is not yet clear how much of a settlement each person will get, due to the severity of the side effects and the vast number of people involved in such a case, the settlements from the company may total in the billions.
